A

Automatic Target Recognition (ATR) - This technology used with a total station instrument allows the instrument to automatically track a survey prism. Via remote control on the prism pole a surveyor can control the total station instrument.

C

Control Survey - Surveys taken to establish reference points, elevations, and lines for preliminary and construction surveys.

Computer Aided Design or Drafting (CAD) - is the use of computer-based tools that help engineers and surveyors in their design projects. Over the past years, this method of drafting has been replacing board drafting.

D

Digital Terrain Model (DTM) - A three-dimensional computer model of the Earth's surface, this model can be used to analyze changes in elevations.

E

Electronic Device Measurement (EDM) - A form of measuring that uses electronic equipment to measure the horizontal and vertical angles of a subject.

G

Global Positioning System (GPS) - Equipment and Software used to determine a specific point on earth using the transmissions of signals from orbiting satellites in space.

P

Property Survey - A survey to establish or re-establish the limits of a property.

R

Route Surveys - Preliminary, control and construction surveys that cover a long but narrow area, as in highway and railroad construction.

Real time positioning (real time kinematics, RTK) - RTK requires a base station to measure the satellites' signals, process the baseline corrections, and then broadcast the corrections (differences) to any number of roving receivers that are simultaneously tracking the same satellites.

Right-of-Way - the right to cross or pass over a parcel of land; may be a right to use a road or driveway, a right to construct power lines (above or below) through the property, or a right to put pipes underground.

S

Surveying - is the art and science of accurately determining the position of points and the distances between them. These points are usually, but not exclusively, associated with positions on the surface of the Earth, and are often used to establish land boundaries for ownership or governmental purposes. T

Total Station - An electronic theodolite combined with electronic device measurement (EDM) capable of measuring and recording vertical and horizontal distances and angles and then computing the X, Y, Z values.
